Basic Purpose
Positions in this job family are assigned responsibilities involving the production of various goods or materials or the delivery of various services through the Oklahoma State Industries Program administered by the Department of Corrections.
This includes manufacturing operations involving items such as modular furniture, metal products, mattresses and other items and service contracts such as computer programming and data entry.
Typical Functions
Delivers correctional industries products to buyers; provides for supervision and security of inmate work crews in delivering and installing various items; operates a commercial vehicle to deliver shipments.
Inspects delivered products for damage and quality of merchandise; may perform minor repairs on site; trains inmate workers in the proper use of various tools and equipment.
Plans, supervises and coordinates the operations of a manufacturing or service industry within the Oklahoma State Industries Program; provides direction to assigned staff, including other employees and inmate workers; prepares required reports and other information concerning industry operations and activities.
Provides training to employees or inmates in the operation of various types of machinery or other equipment used in the manufacturing process or in providing various services through the industrial program.
Requisitions raw materials, supplies and equipment as needed; maintains inventory and production cost records; supervises the storage and delivery of finished products.
Maintains security and discipline of inmates in the shop or work area; enforces prison rules and regulations; observes and evaluates inmates work performance and compliance with established standards of conduct.
Level Description
At this level employees are assigned responsibilities involving the direction of a correctional industry which is large in size and scope, including highly technical or heavy manufacturing operations or a service industry which is highly technical or has a large number of inmates assigned.
Education and Experience
Education and Experience requirements at this level consist of three years experience in data processing, programming or operations or in a production capacity such as quality control, inventory or production control, or in manufacturing or in food processing or food service management plus two years of operations or production experience, including one year is a supervisory capacity; or a substitution of one year of experience in correctional or security work for one year of the required experience only.
Knowledge, Skills, Abilities and Competencies
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities required at this level include knowledge of the methods and operations of the industry for which responsibility is assigned; of the operation and maintenance of production machinery and equipment used in the industry; of supervisory principles and practices; and of modern record keeping procedures, including perpetual inventory procedures.
Ability is required to establish and maintain effective working relationships with others; to supervise the work of inmates; to follow oral and written instructions and regulations; and to conduct several projects simultaneously.
Special Requirements
Some positions will require that applicants must be willing and able to fulfill all job related travel normally associated with the position.
Some positions will require possession of a valid Class A or B Oklahoma Commercial Drivers License, with appropriate endorsements, at the time of appointment.
Some positions may require experience in a specific type of manufacturing or service industry.
