*Job Title:* Child Support Legal Assistant
*General Description:*
Assists with legal research, prepares and drafts court documents, coordinates and monitors court hearings, maintains a close working relationship with tribal and state courts and acts as a liaison between the courts and Chickasaw Nation Child Support Services.
*Supervision Received:* Manager, CSS Legal Team *Supervision Exercised:* None *Supervision Essential Job Functions:* * Performs intense legal research as required by manager, attorney(s) and/or director.
* Prepares and drafts court documents and attends hearings in tribal and state courts.
* Performs work that requires discretion and independent judgment in the application of specialized knowledge of tribal laws and regulations, precedent decisions, agency and department policies and procedures, judicial or quasi-judicial administrative proceedings.
* Provides technical assistance to tribal and state courts on established standards utilized by Child Support Services.
* Connects clients to available resources and collaborates with other entities and team members to provide the most comprehensive resources available for clients and their families.
* Initiates and responds to telephone calls and child support inquiries as needed.
* Maintains a daily log of legal activities to compile monthly reports to the respective manager.
* Meets with clients in office by either appointment or walk in.
* Participates on special projects, committees, and taskforces as assigned.
* Provides exceptional customer service and treats all co-workers and clients with dignity and respect, being courteous and professional in all situations.
* Performs buccal swab collection for genetic testing.
* Computation of child support.
* It is the responsibility of each employee to attend any training required for his/her position or profession as determined by his/her line of support or the executive leadership of the Chickasaw Nation.
Also, it is the responsibility of those who supervise, manage or otherwise lead employees (or teams) to ensure that each employee receives all required training.
* All other duties as assigned.
*Minimum Qualifications* *Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:* *Preferred* - Ability to communicate effectively and provide exceptional customer service, both internal and external.
*Preferred* - Knowledge of legal terminology and courtroom procedures; knowledge of federal, state, and tribal laws, regulations, and policies pertaining child support.
*Preferred* - Ability to prepare and draft legal pleadings.
*Preferred* - Possess the skill and ability to utilize computer programs including Microsoft Office in order to prepare written and oral reports and presentations in a clear, concise and impartial manner.
*Preferred* - Ability to maintain discretion while working with confidential material/information with a high-volume workload.
*Preferred* - Ability to learn and be sensitive to Chickasaw and other Native American culture.
*Education:* *Bachelors Preferred* - Bachelor’s Degree in legal studies or formal legal assistant training preferred.
*Education Note:* *Training And Experience:* *Preferred Experience* (3 -5 years) - Legal work.
*Preferred Experience* (3 -5 years) - Dealing with high volume workload and pressure situations.
*Preferred Experience* (6 months - 3 years) - Working with child support, tribal courts and OSIS computer system.
*Licenses, Certifications, Other:* *Required* - Ability to obtain buccal swab certification for genetic testing laboratory.
*Required* - Possess and maintain a valid Oklahoma driver’s license with a safe driving record.
*Required* - Must pass a background check including FBI fingerprinting, local law enforcement check and residency authorization.
*Preferred* - Complete pre-employment drug test with a negative result.
*Physical Requirements:* *Preferred* - Must be able to lift and transport files (1 to 50+ files) for any given court date.
*Preferred* - Must be able to sit for long periods of time.
*Work Environment:* Work is performed in an office environment.
Light travel is required.
