This position will assist in ensuring compliance of Oklahoma Department of Transportation projects with the Endangered Species Act especially with regard to federally protected species of bat, the Migratory Bird Treaty Act, the Bald and Golden Eagle Protection Act and other environmental permits and regulations.
The position will also monitor the implementation of environmental mitigation commitments for transportation projects.
Job Duties: Plans, designs and conducts scientific experiments.
Performs fieldwork as needed to make observations and collect data.
Analyzes and interprets data.
Presents research results and prepares research for publication.
Operates and maintains highly technical research equipment and facilities and assists others in the proper use of equipment.
Procures supplies and equipment needed for laboratory and field operations.
Assists in preparing funding proposals.
Assists with the preparation, identification, and cataloging of information and specimens.
Conducts literature searches as needed.
May teach one or more classes or seminars.
Performs various duties as needed to successfully fulfill the function of the position.
Job Requirements Required Education: Bachelor's degree in a related field.
24 months of related research experience Equivalency/Substitution: Will accept 48 months of related experience in lieu of the Bachelor's degree for a total of 72 months of related experience.
Skills: Habitat assessments for threatened and endangered species.
Experience with the identification of the flora and fauna common to Oklahoma and surrounding states.
Ability to accurately and completely record data on field forms or in other required formats.
Ability to use topographic maps, aerial photographs, GPS units, and other maps and tools to navigate and survey locations and collect data.
Technical report writing skills (e.
g.
, Biological Assessments).
Knowledge of research methodologies and techniques Proficient in Microsoft Office Preparing various types of reports and National Environmental Policy Act documentation.
Experience using ESRI Arcmap and GIS software.
Advertised Physical Requirements: Ability to perform bending, kneeling, standing, and lifting and carrying objects weighing 35 pounds over rough terrain and have a tolerance for working in outdoor environments, including prolonged hiking or standing on various terrain in a wide range of weather conditions.
Ability to ascend/descend ladders to a height of 25 feet.
Ability to navigate small, dark enclosed spaces, such as steel or concrete pipe structures as small as 2.
5 feet in diameter and several hundred feet in length.
Ability to travel to remote areas of Oklahoma.
Routine overnight travel required.
Clean driving record.
Departmental Preferences: BS in Environmental, Biological, Ecological Science or related field.
Two (2) to five (5) years of experience conducting environmental fieldwork and reporting.
Knowledge of bat natural history and ecology, especially for species in Oklahoma.
Experience with bat identification is preferred.
Applicants must have received rabies preexposure vaccinations or be willing to obtain such vaccinations (funded by the employer).
